2009 Application Season

NEW!  The Pennsylvania Governor's School for Urban Teaching at Temple University.

NEW! The Pennsylvania Governor's School for Teaching at Millersville University will be accepting applications from both sophomores and juniors.


September 2008:  Applications for the 2009 Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools are available online beginning in late September.  Applicants and schools are reminded to discard paper applications marked “2008” or earlier.

October 2008:  Paper copies of the applications will be available in all public and non-public secondary schools in Pennsylvania in early October.

October – December 2008:  Applicants are strongly advised to work on their applications during this time period and to set a goal of completing them by the holidays.

Application Deadlines

Monday, January 5, 2009:  POSTMARK deadline for the Governor’s School for the Arts (PGSA).  Though the postmark deadline is established, applicants are strongly urged to NOT send applications for the Governor’s School for the Arts through the mail because of vulnerability of loss or damage of artistic work samples.  However, if an applicant has no other way to deliver an application to the local Intermediate Unit,  send the application no later than this date to assure that it arrives by the receipt deadline (see below), Thursday, January 8, 2009.  If waiting until the last week, it is advisable to use overnight or priority delivery service to make sure the application is received no later than 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2009.  The Governor’s Schools and Intermediate Units cannot be held liable for applications that are delayed, damaged or lost in the mail.

Thursday, January 8, 2009:  RECEIPT deadline for the Governor's School for the Arts (PGSA).  Applications must have been received in the offices of the local Intermediate Units no later than 3 p.m.  No exceptions.  Page 8 of the application form lists phone numbers for local intermediate units.

Thursday, January 8, 2009: POSTMARK deadline for the Governor's School for International Studies (PGSIS), the Governor's School for the Sciences (PGSS) and the Governor's School for Teaching (PGST).  Applications must have been sent to the Department of Education by this date and received by Wednesday, January 14, 2009. If waiting until the deadline to send the application, consider using overnight or second-day delivery service to assure its arrival by the receipt deadline.

Thursday, February 5, 2009:  POSTMARK deadline for the Governor's School for the Agricultural Sciences (PGSAS), the Governor's School for Global Entrepreneurship (PGSGE), the Governor's School for Health Care (PGSHC), and the Governor's School for Information, Society and Technology (PGSIST).  Applications must have been sent to the Department of Education by this date and received by Wednesday, February 11, 2009. If waiting until the deadline to send the application, consider using overnight or second-day delivery service to assure its arrival by the receipt deadline.

Selection Processes and Notification Schedule

Please note:  The Governor’s Schools cannot respond to requests for earlier notification.  Notification is made by first-class mail to the applicant’s home.  The Governor's Schools cannot provide individual assessments or grant appeals to the selection process.

February 2009:  Results of the first level of screening for the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts should have been received by applicants by the end of February.  

March 2009:  Semifinalist auditions for the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts begin on weekends in the second half of March.

April 2009:  Semifinalist auditions for the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts continue into the middle of April.

Early April 2009:  Results of the selection processes for the Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools for the Sciences, International Studies and Teaching should have been received by applicants in the first week of April.

Third Week, April 2009:  Results of the selection processes for the Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools for the Agricultural Sciences, Global Entrepreneurship, Health Care and Information, Society and Technology will be put into the mail in the third week of April and applicants can anticipate receiving the information in that time frame.

End of April 2009:  The final results of the selection process for the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts will be sent out in late April and applicants can anticipate receiving the information by the very end of the month.

Commitment and Operations

May 2009:  Those who have received invitations to participate in the Governor’s Schools will have a deadline in early May by which to file commitment papers.  Prime time for program directors to contact alternate candidates to fill positions created by those who declined invitations is the last three weeks of May.  

June 28 – August 1, 2009:  All Governor's Schools in operation.  Students must commit to arriving according to the schedule set by the Governor's School program director, remaining in residence for the full 35 day program without absences, and departing according to the schedule set by the program director.  Students must participate in the full curricular and residential program and to arrive promptly for classes and activities.  There is time available during the day for personal errands and casual running or recreational activities.  The programs cannot provide special facilities or alter schedules for formal athletic training, intensive music study or other commitments unrelated to the program.
