Hints for PGSA Applicants in Creative Writing |
|
|
1. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO ASSEMBLE THE APPLICATION.
2. Follow the directions: The application manuscript consists of a 1 – 2 page narrative statement and 4 – 7 pages of your writing. Your name must appear on every page.
3. Follow the directions: The creative writing should consist of a fiction sample and/or poetry. Do not include plays, journalism, essays or research.
4. KEEP PAPER COPIES OF THE FULL APPLICATION. The application materials are not returned and computers can crash taking files with them.
5. Overall format: The narrative statement and writing sample must be word-processed (typed). The narrative statement should be double-spaced; fiction, too. Poetry may be single- or double-spaced, and more than one poem may appear on a page.
6. Font: Please do not use decorative fonts. “Times,” “Times Roman,” “Arial” and many other similar letter-quality fonts are desirable. Please do not use tiny print or overly large lettering. 12-point is a reliable size in most fonts.
7. Review the work for grammar and spelling.
8. Do not use binders, covers or plastic sleeves to encase the manuscript. Extraneous material will be removed before the manuscript reaches the selection panel. Staple the narrative statement and work sample behind the application form.
9. The narrative statement is also reviewed for quality of writing, style and creative expression. Take time to do a thoughtful job.
10. Regarding fiction samples: Select an excerpt from one long story, or one 4 – 7 page story, or at most two short excerpts or stories. Too many short pieces may not show your ability to build theme, character, setting, dialogue and plot.
11. Regarding poetry samples: Select poems that best represent your range of experience in terms of style, form and subject matter.
