Entrepreneurship is defined as the organizing and managing of a business undertaking. In the global economy that grew up in the latter part of the 20th century, it became imperative that successful entrepreneurs maintain a worldview and interact with an international culture. The Pennsylvania Governor's School for Global Entrepreneurship was initiated in 2001 to expose talented high school students to the creative processes and effective business practices that will inspire future business leaders.

The Pennsylvania Governor's School for Global Entrepreneurship was initiated in 2001 to expose talented high school students to the creative processes and effective business practices that will inspire future business leaders.The Pennsylvania Governor's School for Global Entrepreneurship takes place at Lehigh University in Bethlehem and takes advantage of the Iacocca Institute, the Colleges of Business and Education, and the commerce resources in the greater Lehigh Valley. Core Courses: The curriculum readily adapts to the breaking news and changes in the global market place. Students pursue one core course in depth each week for four weeks: Week I: Entrepreneurs as Creative Leaders, Week 2: Understanding the Marketplace: A Look At The Big Picture, Week 3: Idea to Design to Market, and Week 4: Going Global: Doing Business Internationally. Focus Courses: Each week, students select a new elective course to pursue in depth. The varied roster changes from year to year but a representative sample of courses is: Vision and Entrepreneurs, Creating a Global Team, Leadership Style and Development, Networking Around the Globe, Win-Win Negotiating, Entrepreneurship and the Sports Industry, Creativity in Action, E-Commerce, Starting High Tech Businesses, Entrepreneurship and the Arts, and Business Ethics. Entrepreneurial Experiences: Working in teams according to skill and interest areas, students have had an opportunity to partner with a company or enterprise to experience first-hand what it takes to be successful in business. Teams are assigned a current problem faced by the host company and prepare a formal business plan and presentation for the company executives. Past hosts have included Just Born Candy, PPL, Sixth Street Shelter, Cigars International, St. Lukes Hospital, Lehigh Valley Veldrome, State Theater and Martin Guitar. Entrepreneurs in Residence: Global entrepreneurs representing a variety of backgrounds, expertise and products serve as guest presenters and meet informally with students, sharing their stories of success and lessons learned. Entrepreneurial Excursions: In small groups, students tour a variety of local companies and organizations to observe entrepreneurship in action. They meet executives and employees. Recent excursions have included the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank, Binney & Smith and Reading Phillies baseball. International Students and Global Exchanges: Lehigh University has obtained a grant to underwrite the participation of ten international high school students who live and learn alongside the Pennsylvania students. Additionally, international college students facilitate dialgoues on issues of expertiese and importance from the perspective of their countries and cultures. |
