The applications are read by faculty and administrators from Drexel University, officials from the state Department of Education and representatives of technology industries and services. After making initial selections, the panel of readers returns to the applications to assign campus designation for each accepted student. The panel makes an effort to honor expressed preferences for particular sites, but is not able to guarantee it. Accepted candidates who are unhappy with the campus assignment may drop out and be placed on the alternate list for the other campus, but without a guarantee of being called to participate. Applications are sorted into Intermediate Unit region groups (geographic). Applications are only compared to others in the same group and not to the entire pool. If a region does not have applications that meet basic or competitive criteria, no one from that region will be taken (however, that is a rare occurrence). A strong performance in the essays is critical to selection; a strong transcript and/or high test scores will not offset sloppy, indifferent writing.
